Improving English Language Skills in Residential Schools of the Department of Social Justice, Maharashtra
CLR introduced the first level of the 3-level digital version of the LRWE course as part of the English Language Improvement Project, a joint initiative with the Department of Social Justice, Maharashtra, and CLR. 9000 students, their teachers and headmasters in 74 residential schools catering to SCs and STs, spread across 26 districts participated in the project. The first level of the course covers the initial steps in the “balanced approach’ to literacy pedagogy, integrating decoding skills with reading for meaning from the very beginning.
Evaluation of Impact
Comparison of pre-test and post-test scores of 107 children in 15 schools indicated that progress was made in all parameters of initial reading skills. Significantly, the improvement was most reflected in children who had no skill to begin with, and progress in the acquisition of more complex skills was also more pronounced.
