Teaching of English in Regional Medium Contexts
THE CONTEXT

OUR APPROCH
India’s linguistic diversity influences our approach to English language learning. Recognizing students’ multilingual backgrounds, we develop programs that integrate regional languages, ensuring a bilingual pedagogical framework. Our research-driven courses, training programs, and teaching materials—available in audio, digital, and print formats—equip educators and learners with the skills needed to thrive in an English-rich environment.
A Holistic Approach to English Language Teaching (ELT)
Effective English teaching requires a comprehensive strategy that strengthens key stakeholders within the school ecosystem. Our programs focus on three core areas:
- Empowering Teachers – Enhancing English proficiency and pedagogical skills for teaching English as a second language through our Enhance Your English program.
- Supporting Students – Strengthening foundational English skills and building confidence through our We Learn English and Yuva English programs.
- Creating a Language-Rich Environment – Providing access to CLR’s high-quality children’s literature in English and bilingual formats to foster engaging and immersive classrooms.
WHO WE SUPPORT
- Students – Learners in regional medium schools and out-of-school youth/young adults.
- Teachers – English teachers in regional medium schools, equipping them with effective ESL strategies.
- Classrooms – Enriching learning environments with CLR’s graded children’s literature for emergent readers.
By strengthening English learning at multiple levels, we aim to create a lasting impact, empowering both students and teachers to succeed.

2. Let’s Read and Write English (LRWE)
LRWE is a 3-level bilingual audio-visual course, with English/Marathi and English/Hindi versions, to teach reading and writing skills in English at the primary and middle-school level. At present the materials for these levels can be accessed in book form in bulk print-runs, and also in e-learning formats. In both cases, the course pedagogy is interactive, involving the distant teacher and the classroom teacher in transacting the content.
The interactive feature of LRWE is based on research in second language pedagogy and in literacy learning. Hence it covers oral language development, and the ‘balanced approach’ to literacy instruction, involving both decoding and meaning-making skills. Beginning skills in spelling and independent writing are also included. The reading content is based on the real lives and interests of students from disadvantaged rural and urban communities.

3. Enhance Your English (EYE) – Empowering Regional Medium School Teachers
The Enhance Your English (EYE) program strengthens the English proficiency and teaching skills of regional medium school teachers, addressing a key challenge highlighted in the 2005 National Curriculum Framework—the limited command of English among educators. It builds confidence and competence in speaking, reading, and writing English, enabling teachers to effectively deliver English lessons.
- Speaking & Listening – Improving communication skills for both classroom and everyday use.
- Reading & Writing – Strengthening comprehension and basic writing abilities.
- Classroom English – Encouraging teachers to use English as the medium of instruction.
- ELT Pedagogy & Practice – Supporting teachers in adopting new English Language Teaching (ELT) strategies through collaboration, guidance, and hands-on assistance.
Course Structure
- Two-Phase Training Model – Develops a pool of Master Trainers to cascade learning to a wider teacher network.
- 10 Modules at Two Levels (L1 & L2) – A structured, progressive approach to language and pedagogy.
- Hybrid Learning Approach:
- Offline Teacher Professional Development (TPD) Sessions – In-person workshops for deeper learning.
- Online Peer Learning Communities (PLCs) – Collaborative discussions for continuous improvement.
